Just as the sweltering summer heat begins to become unbearable on Wilmington’s Riverwalk, a cool refreshing treat lies steps ahead in the old J.W. Brooks Wholesale Grocer’s store. GelaRto gelateria recently opened on Water Street in Wilmington’s historic district then COVID-19 paused their grand debut. But even a global pandemic couldn’t keep this Insta-worthy ice cream from drawing a crowd.

The shop is clad with authentic Italian decor, from the Vespa stools to the Fiat bench, you can’t find a seat that doesn’t bring a smile to your face or make you snap a photo. But once you choose a place to sit and take the first bite of cool lemon gelato, you’re transported to the shores of southern Italy, with robust flavors of a massive Sicilian lemon. From tiramisu to coconut, the variety of flavors pleases every palate. If gelato alone wasn’t enough to sell you, the sight of their delectable desserts will leave you wanting more.

Wilmington’s latest gem in the historic district is must-see on your a pleasant stroll down the Cape Fear Riverwalk. Learn more about GelaRto by visiting their website or following them on Instagram, @gelartowilmington.
